Local SEO statistics for 2026

The local search numbers you can actually trust, because every figure links to its original source. We pulled the statistics that matter most to local businesses: how people search, how the map pack behaves, what a Google Business Profile is worth, how reviews decide, what local searches convert into, and how AI Overviews are changing discovery. Where we run our own math on that data we label it CurbSide analysis and show the arithmetic. Cite anything freely, a link back is appreciated. • 72% of consumers look at three or fewer businesses before deciding (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 42% of searchers click a Google map pack result for local queries (Backlinko, 2024).
  • 76% of people who search nearby on a smartphone visit a business within a day, and 28% make a purchase (Google, via Backlinko, 2024).
  • Only 35% of small and medium businesses have claimed a Google Business Profile (BrightLocal, 2025).
  • 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • AI Overviews now appear in 68% of local searches, versus 39% for local packs (Whitespark, 2026).
  • 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • CurbSide analysis: a business outside the top three is effectively invisible to about 7 in 10 searchers (derived from the 72% who look at three or fewer businesses, BrightLocal, 2026).
  • CurbSide analysis: for about 3 in 10 local searches, Google now shows an AI answer with no local pack behind it (the 29-point gap between 68% AI Overviews and 39% local packs, Whitespark, 2026).
  • CurbSide analysis: roughly two in three businesses have never claimed the single most important asset in local search (100% minus the 35% with a Google Business Profile, BrightLocal, 2025).

How people search

How do people search for local businesses today?

Constantly, on a phone, and fast. Local search is a daily habit, most of it happens on mobile, and buyers decide from a short list within minutes, so being in that list is close to everything.

The takeaway: people search often, on mobile, and decide quickly from a handful of options. If you are not in that short list, you are not considered. More in local SEO for small business.

The map pack

How does the map pack behave, and how much does it matter?

It is where a large share of local clicks and calls happen. Most local journeys run through Google, a big chunk of clicks go to the three-business map pack, and many searches happen inside maps directly.

  • 52% of consumers start their most recent local search on Google, and 71% use Google Search at some point in the journey (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 42% of searchers click on Google map pack results for local queries (Backlinko, 2024).
  • 72% of consumers look at three or fewer businesses before deciding, and only 1% look at more than ten (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • Roughly 1 in 5 consumers conduct local searches directly within maps like Google, Apple, and Bing (BrightLocal, 2025).

CurbSide analysis

A business outside the top three is invisible to about 7 in 10 searchers

The math: 72% of consumers look at three or fewer businesses before choosing (BrightLocal, 2026), which rounds to about seven in ten. The three-slot map pack is the whole shortlist for most people, so ranking into it is the single highest-leverage move in local SEO. See our guide to ranking higher on Google.

Google Business Profile

How much does a Google Business Profile actually move the needle?

A lot, and it is underused. A complete, accurate profile measurably lifts trust, visits, and purchase intent, incorrect information drives people away, and most businesses have not even claimed theirs.

  • Customers are 2.7 times more likely to consider a business reputable when it has a complete Google Business Profile (Google).
  • A complete profile makes customers 70% more likely to visit and 50% more likely to consider buying (Google).
  • 62% of consumers would avoid a business if they found incorrect information about it online (BrightLocal, 2023).
  • Only 35% of small and medium businesses have claimed a Google Business Profile (BrightLocal, 2025).

CurbSide analysis

About two-thirds of businesses have left the front door open

The math: 35% of small and medium businesses have claimed a Google Business Profile (BrightLocal, 2025), so 100% minus 35%, or 65%, roughly two in three, have not. The most important asset in local search is still unclaimed by most of the field, so completing and optimizing yours is a cheap, direct advantage. See our Google Business Profile guide.

Reviews and ratings

How much do reviews and ratings influence who gets chosen?

They are decisive. Nearly everyone reads reviews, most read them on Google, and a poor or thin review profile is the most common reason a business gets ruled out.

  • 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 71% of consumers use Google to read local business reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 65% of consumers who rejected a business did so for a review-related reason, such as negative, low, or missing reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 54% of consumers visit a business’s website after reading positive reviews (BrightLocal, 2026).

CurbSide analysis

When a local business loses a prospect, it is a review problem about 2 in 3 times

The math: 65% of consumers who rejected a business did so for a review-related reason (BrightLocal, 2026), which is about two in three. Reviews drive both the ranking and the customer’s choice, which makes a steady flow of recent, positive reviews the fastest lever most businesses have.

Conversions and actions

What do local searches convert into: calls, visits, and purchases?

Real-world action, and quickly. Local search has the shortest path from query to visit, call, or purchase of any kind of search, often inside a single day.

  • 76% of people who search for something nearby on a smartphone visit a business within a day, and 28% of those searches lead to a purchase (Google, via Backlinko, 2024).
  • 75% of consumers decide which business to use in under 30 minutes (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • 54% of consumers visit a business’s website after reading positive reviews, a direct step toward a call or booking (BrightLocal, 2026).

CurbSide analysis

More than 1 in 4 nearby mobile searches ends in a purchase within a day

The math: 28% of nearby smartphone searches lead to a purchase within a day (Google, via Backlinko, 2024), which is more than one in four. Local intent is high intent, so the sales window is often under 24 hours, and the businesses that show up in that window win the job. Put it in your own numbers with our SEO ROI calculator.

AI Overviews and AI search

Are AI Overviews taking over local search?

They are a growing layer on top of it. AI Overviews now appear on most local searches, many buyers ask AI tools directly, and those tools lean on the same signals as local rankings, so the fundamentals still decide who gets named.

  • AI Overviews now appear in 68% of local searches, versus 39% for local packs on the same queries (Whitespark, 2026).
  • 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for local business recommendations (BrightLocal, 2026).
  • Earning a spot in ChatGPT local recommendations is estimated to be about 30 times harder than ranking in Google’s local results (SOCi Local Visibility Index, 2026).
  • Business websites make up 58% of ChatGPT Search sources for local queries, ahead of mentions and directories (BrightLocal, 2024).

CurbSide analysis

About 3 in 10 local searches now get an AI answer with no local pack behind it

The math: AI Overviews appear on 68% of local searches while local packs appear on only 39% of the same queries (Whitespark, 2026). That 29-point gap, about three in ten searches, is where Google shows a synthesized AI answer with no map behind it, so tracking map rankings alone leaves a blind spot on roughly a third of local queries. The fix is the same fundamentals AI leans on. More in is local SEO dead.

The business side

Who invests in local SEO, and does it pay off?

The top performers treat it as a system, not a side task. High-performing brands are far more likely to run a dedicated local strategy, and marketers rank the profile itself as the most valuable service.

CurbSide analysis

Top-performing brands are about 1.6 times as likely to run a dedicated local strategy

The math: 94% of high performers have a dedicated local marketing strategy versus 60% of average performers (BrightLocal Brand Beacon Report, 2024), and 94 divided by 60 is about 1.6. Winning local visibility is rarely luck, it is a system run on purpose. See what that looks like with our local SEO service.
